Knitting Activism

nicky epstein 5Here are some unique opportunities to volunteer or support women who help provide for their familys through craft or share their skills and talents for those in need across the globe.  If you know of any other organizations, please leave a note, I’d love to learn more!

Shokay:  Purchase yarn made with “yak down” sourced directly from Tibetan hearders and share your patterns made with Shokay yarn.

FiberFarm.Com:  “Get in touch with your inner little Bo-Peep” by purchasing a share from the country’s first Yarn and Fiber CSA (Community Supported Agriculture), established by Martha’s Vineyard Fiber Farm and Hudson Valley Fiber Farm, to support sustainable, organic yarn producers, and in return, receive a share of the harvest.

Kandahar Treasures is a cooperative for women who create beautiful hand sewn embroidery from the Kandahar region of Afghanistan.

Afghans for Afghans – as shared by Maxon Dixon Knitting,  this is a “humanitarian and educational people-to-people project that sends hand-knit and crocheted blankets and sweaters, vests, hats, mittens, and socks to the beleaguered people of Afghanistan. This grassroots effort is inspired by Red Cross volunteers who made afghans, socks, slippers, and other items for soldiers and refugees during World Wars I and II and other times of crisis and need.”
