Colorwork Knitting Tutorials

multi colored yarn 2Colorwork knitting came to me early in my life. The first memory I have is from a Elizabeth Zimmerman inspired ski sweater circa 1950’s made by my grandmother, one each for my mom and dad. Next came our Intarsia Christmas stockings, made by hand from an aunt, each one faithfully delivered after each child and grandchild was born. We grew up with these stockings hanging by the fireside waiting to be filled by Santa Clause. Then the fun part began, putting our one stocking on our feet and running around the house listening to the jingle bells sewn onto the toes. But I didn’t put hand to needle until I realized, one day, someone has to take over this tradition for the next generation. My first attempts were feable and awkard and I set my needles aside for an entire year. Then I saw a Norwegian inspired afghan from a Marie Claire Idee Magazine that made me really catch knitting fever. I started off knitting 5″ squares, of course, not in the round, so right away, I had to learn to purl and knit in two colors. My fingers were so happy and square after square came off the needles. I was so thrilled, I wanted to create a website with links to all the tools, books, videos, and tutorials that I discovered that were really helpful to me. I didn’t have access to a teacher and I found that there wasn’t really a single source of information that covered it all. I spent alot of time visiting libraries, borrowing books through inter-library loan, searching for Google videos, and experimenting with all kinds of yarns and needles. I hope the results will be helpful to you if you would like to teach yourself how to knit in two colors. You can visit my tutorial blog, Fair Isle and Norwegian Knitting: Lets Get Started, HERE.
