Red Radiation Quilt

Posted by: Kathy on: October 5, 2007

Advice needed!  Found this at the Glorious Color quilt shop and am having a hard time deciding if I would feel overwhelmed with these colors and all the logistical aspects of putting something together like this.  I usually go into a low energy mood during the winter and am hoping to find something to work on that will keep me energized.  Am I getting in way over my head here?  These tend to be my colors so I’m thinking of just going for it and hoping for the best.  Its very difficult to find just the combination of colors you need to make something like this traveling from shop to shop trying to put together a collection of colors that comes this close.  Its all kitted up and ready to buy with one click of the mouse but I’ve never purchased something like this before online.   Sort of scarry and exciting and a little intimidating!

Post Script:

When the kit came, my first reaction was, wow, what happened to the brightness of the fabrics in the photo?!  A little less than half of the fabrics seen in the photo seemed to come  with the kit.  I ended up receiving ALOT of very dark reds which just did not reflect the colors of bright fuschia and red from the photo of the quilt.  Was told by the shop owner that the ’substitutes’ were minor and the majority of the fabrics were indeed those selected by Kaffe.

Here you can see the few fabrics that did come with the kit that I thought were close to what I was expecting, which I added to my other collection of KF fabrics.  If there are any lessons to be learned that I can share from my experience, I think it would be to offer the advice to ‘hand select’ your own fabrics from their site or make sure that there is a photo of the actual kit fabrics along with the fabric name so you have  a way to know what you are ‘actually’ buying.

Post Script II: I finally received another reply from Liza at Glorious Color and this was her reply to account for the differences in color from the quilt kit and the quilt photo:

Hi Kathy,

“Really it is the photo that is off, not the kit. My husband took the picture with our old camera and it is way too pink.It is the same bad photo on the web site.  Kaffe chose the fabrics you have. I suggest you stay with his selection because the play of the duller fabrics with the brights, make the brights much more effective. In fact, when he saw the finished quilt, he remarked that he wished he had put more non-screaming pinks and reds into it. Give it a try, you will likely be pleased with the fabrics he chose.

Best,

Liza

There you have it, “a bad camera” rather than Kaffe’s artistic skills created this fantastic quilt, who would have known?!  I love your quilts Kaffe, but on this one, I like the “bad photo” version better.  My thoughts were to substitute all those dark reds that I just don’t like, with brighter, softer pastels.  I also thought it was strange to be told that I should prefer the colors Kaffe picked rather than the colors from the photo that attracted me to the quilt in the first place, and even in Kaffe’s books he states that he actually prefers to know that quilters are not copying buy rather being inspired to make their “own” versions.  Interestingly, the photo is now no longer viewable on the Glorious Color website as of the time of this writing, the same day I received their reply.

I love Kaffe Fasset’s designs. The patterns are not complicated, and the beautiful fabrics do most of the work. This would be a great winter project. All those warm colors will be like having a fabric fireplace of your very own.

Kits are the way to go! You won’t get sidetracked into some other “possibility” and end up with something less wonderful than the original!

Very intelligent post. I too adore Kaffe, have from the 80’s when I knitted his coats etc with literally hundreds of shades of yarn.
Since I started quilting in 2000 I have devoured his books and he always said he couldn’t wait to see individual interpretations of his quilts….that was then……..now I feel that he has for some reason been hijacked by the industry……and by that I mean the money making industry. It must be hard for artists to stay true to their ideals when money is involved. Maybe it explains his complete indifference to his fans at various quilt meetings. I have heard from two women I respect that he was indifferent to the point of rudeness when signing books…….maybe he is fed up with the sheer amount of ’stick to the kit’ mentality and is hoping for some individuals who can, dare I say it, interpret his quilts.
Not sure what you are going to do but I say trust your instincts. I for one am fed up with the commercialization of the quilting industry…good heavens it costs over 50 dollars a month Australian to do some block of the month quilts……..over 12 months the price is mind boggling and quite frankly sickening, when you think of the good various charities could do with 50 dollars a month.
I say back to the ways of the ancestors and start using what we’ve got and hell, maybe we can help save the planet while we are at it.
Sorry this is reading more like one of my blog entries should if I had the courage to go up against the industry.
Thanks for this post,
Regards Kathleen.
